RAF drone tracks Russian warships in English Channel for first time
An unarmed RAF Protector drone has been used to monitor Russian naval activity in the English Channel for the first time.
An unarmed RAF Protector RG1 drone has tracked Russian warships in the English Channel, marking the first operational use of an RAF remotely piloted aircraft in the Channel. Flying for over ten hours between late September and mid-October, the drone worked alongside Royal Navy warships and helicopters to provide intelligence and surveillance. The Ministry of Defence said the operation represented a 'step change' in monitoring Russian activity. Russian naval presence in British waters increased by 25 per cent during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
