How we use AI

The headlines and summaries on news.today are written by an AI model, not by a journalist. We would rather say that plainly than have you wonder.

Where AI is used

• Grouping. A small language model running on our own server works out which articles are about the same event.
• Summarising. Anthropic's Claude writes each story's headline, summary and section from the headlines and standfirsts of the articles in the group, and the morning brief from those summaries.

What it is given

Only headlines and standfirsts from publishers' public RSS feeds, labelled by outlet. It is never given full articles, and it is instructed to use nothing else it may know.

What can go wrong

AI can misread a headline, merge two similar events, or state something more firmly than the sources do. Our rules and automatic checks are designed to make that rare, and a person reads a sample every day, but it will sometimes happen. Every story links to its sources so you can check, and you can report a problem from any story or at corrections@news.today.

What AI is not used for

No images are generated. No quotes are invented: quoted words come from the source headlines. Nothing is personalised: everyone sees the same stories in the same order.
