North Oxfordshire homes get full fibre broadband four months early

More than 3,880 rural homes and businesses in North Oxfordshire have been connected to full fibre broadband four months ahead of schedule. The upgrade was delivered through the UK Government's Project Gigabit scheme and completed early by broadband provider Gigaclear. It covers rural villages and hamlets including Stratton Audley, Hanwell, Horley, Wendlebury and North Newington.
Telecoms minister Ian Murray said: 'Finishing this broadband upgrade four months early is great news for communities across rural North Oxfordshire, with thousands of homes and businesses now able to get fast, reliable connections thanks to government investment.' He added that the improved broadband is expected to support remote working, education, business operations and access to online public services.
When asked about upgrading Oxford city centre, Mr Murray said Project Gigabit focuses on areas 'where the market can't go' because it is too expensive for commercial providers. He noted a separate project in South Oxfordshire worth nearly £24m for 9,000 premises. Mr Murray was unable to explain why the North Oxfordshire work was finished early. The government has announced that Project Gigabit is helping to support around 3,000 skilled jobs and apprenticeships in the digital infrastructure sector.
