Milwaukee County discloses $4.56m budget error after Crowley's election

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 6 Nov, 02:51 · Archive

Milwaukee County disclosed a $4.56 million budget error the day after County Executive David Crowley was elected governor. Crowley is responsible for the county's budget and will oversee the state's budget as governor. The error was discovered several weeks before the election but was not disclosed to county supervisors until after Crowley's victory.

The county said an automated system error, not a manual entry mistake, overstated $4.56 million in tax-levy savings from airport-related accounts. The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the budget and voted for an investigation into what occurred. Milwaukee County Supervisor Shawn Rolland said the loss of trust was worse than the error itself, stating supervisors should have been informed immediately.

A spokesperson for Crowley's office said he was aware of the error and that the office acted immediately to find a solution. The spokesperson did not say when Crowley became aware of the discrepancy. Supervisor Steve Taylor, who chairs the Finance Committee, criticised the two-week delay in resolving the issue, saying 'that's just an awful excuse'. The county says it expects to end 2027 with a balanced budget.
