Hertfordshire criminals convicted in October court cases

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 27 Oct, 05:02 · Archive

Five Hertfordshire criminals have been convicted in October including an 83-year-old man who supplied morphine to a woman who died from an overdose.

Five Hertfordshire criminals have been convicted in October in a busy month for the county's courts.

Jeffrey 'Arthur' Sutton, 83, of Hatfield, was sentenced to 26 months in prison, suspended for two years, at St Albans Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to three counts of offering to supply morphine to three different women. One recipient was 27-year-old Lily Gomes, also from Hatfield, a mother of two who died in hospital on February 18, 2025, from morphine toxicity. She had fallen unconscious at Sutton's home four days before her death, and he called an ambulance after being unable to wake her.

Lily's mother said of the case: 'I continue to feel anger when I think about how vulnerable Lily was. She was struggling with addiction and was easily influenced. I believe that vulnerability was known and exploited. That is something I find impossible to accept and impossible to forgive.'

A second case involved Gary Sandford, 67, who was jailed after driving on the wrong side of the A505 dual carriageway near Baldock on September 13, 2024, at around 10.50pm. His Mercedes collided head-on with a Ford, seriously injuring two people. Sandford had passed numerous warning signs and road markings and ignored warnings from vehicles travelling in the correct direction which he narrowly missed.
