Police in Yuma, Arizona rescued a 91-year-old woman after a high-speed chase on Interstate 8 over the weekend. The woman was found unresponsive in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by Jeffery Proett, 57, who is now facing ten charges including kidnapping and fleeing police.

The incident began when officers were alerted to a driver who had fled a traffic stop in Wellton, about 30 miles east of Yuma. A Yuma officer later spotted the vehicle at a gas station. When the officer approached the driver getting out of the vehicle, the driver became aggressive and assaulted the officer. As the suspect tried to flee, the officer noticed the elderly female unresponsive in the passenger seat.

Police spotted the vehicle again and pursued it on Interstate 8. The Department of Public Safety joined the chase, using spike strips on the vehicle around milepost 43 near Tacna. After the vehicle stopped, Proett fought with officers again before being taken into custody. The victim was taken to Onvida Health in Yuma, where she is in stable condition.

Both the victim and Proett are from Colorado. Police say the two knew each other, though investigators are still determining how. No missing persons report had been filed for the victim. At his first court appearance on Monday, Proett appeared in a wheelchair and acted erratically.
