More than 60 Age Friendly Dorset ambassadors gathered to celebrate efforts in making the county a better place to grow older.
More than 60 ambassadors and supporters of the Age Friendly Dorset programme gathered at an event in Charlton Down to celebrate their efforts in making Dorset a better place to grow older. The celebration brought together advocates from the movement to reflect on achievements and discuss future plans.
Over the past year, more than 700 people took part in an Age Friendly Dorset survey, which shaped a three-year action plan for 2026–2029. The plan focuses on improving access to information and services, building stronger community connections, promoting digital inclusion, transport and housing awareness, creating accessible environments, and increasing opportunities for older people to influence decisions. Current projects include a framework for Age Friendly Towns and Parishes, the Ageing without Children project with Help and Kindness, and established working and reference groups.
Councillor Steve Robinson, Dorset Council's adult social care portfolio lead, said: 'Age Friendly Dorset is more than a council project. It is a movement that communities across Dorset can be part of. By bringing generations together, listening to older residents and turning their ideas into practical action, we can help create places where people are supported, connected and valued as they grow older.' Nearly one in three residents in Dorset are aged over 65, compared to around one in five nationally.
The event featured speakers including Sarah Parsons, programme lead for Age Friendly Dorset, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset Michael Dooley, and author Rachel Woodward Carrick. The celebration was sponsored by Age UK North, South and West Dorset and Ridgewater Energy.
