Designer Wilson Jedd Adams presented garments made entirely of plastic at Melbourne Fashion Week's Cult Status Runway on Wednesday night at State Library Victoria. The collection, titled Fantastic Plastic, is the third instalment in a four-part series that sits between concept art and fashion, following earlier collections called Metropolis and Paper Dolls. The garments were constructed from polyester, cellophane, tape, plastic bags and tablecloths.
Adams said the work reflects litter across the city. 'It's expanding from the city and it goes down to what's littered all over the city,' he told AAP. He sent four separate looks down the runway alongside other designers including Chris Ran Lin, Club Venus, Gotham, Liandra, Perple, Toile Studios and art knitwear brand Wah-Wah Australia.
Adams announced plans to move beyond concept pieces into ready-to-wear fashion. 'We're probably going to pivot a bit into more ready-to-wear, a story with layers and also finding a way to repeat things that people gravitate to as well,' he said. Melbourne Fashion Week continues until Sunday and includes fashion capsules around the city, among them a bridal showcase outside Melbourne Town Hall featuring designs by Vera Wang Bride and Vivienne Westwood.
