Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 05:32 · Archive

Counter terrorism police are investigating after two men were arrested at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire.

Security patrols by Ministry of Defence Police at RAF Molesworth identified an abandoned vehicle at 10pm on Wednesday 7 October. Officers from Cambridgeshire Constabulary attended and further searches revealed a small breach in the perimeter fence. At 2am the following day, two men aged 36 and 32 were arrested inside the base perimeter.

The pair were initially arrested on suspicion of trespass on a prohibited site and criminal damage. They were then further arrested on suspicion of an offence under section 4 of the National Security Act 2023. The Latvian nationals living in the UK were released on bail with strict conditions on Friday 9 October. Officers carried out two searches at addresses in the Peterborough area in connection with the investigation.

The abandoned vehicle prompted the deployment of specialist EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) officers for additional checks. As a precaution, a cordon was put in place affecting local roads in the Glatton area, including part of the A1(M). After assessment by specialist officers, nothing of concern was found and all cordons were lifted.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: 'There is nothing from our investigation so far to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week.' The incident is now being investigated by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing.
