Almost £6m invested in Lake District farming projects

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 12 Oct, 11:56 · Archive

Nearly £6 million of government funding has supported 308 farming projects in the Lake District since 2021.

Nearly £6 million of government funding through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) scheme has supported 308 projects in the Lake District since 2021. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) programme is delivered by the Lake District National Park Authority and aims to provide benefits for nature, climate, people and place.

In January, the government announced an extension to FiPL funding, with the scheme now running until March 2029. To mark National Farmers' Day on 12 October, the National Park Authority is encouraging farmers and landowners to come forward with new projects and explore the available funding.

Claire Foster, Farming Officer at the Lake District National Park Authority, said: 'The funding extension is fantastic news for local farmers, including tenants and commoners, whose farm businesses and livelihoods are woven into the Lake District landscape.' She added: 'We're keen to hear from farmers who have never explored or benefited from FiPL funding before.'

One example of the scheme's impact is the restoration of a derelict barn at Wescoe Farm in Borrowdale, near Keswick, using FiPL funding. Farmer Bryan Fell undertook the project with support from the programme.
