Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 10 Oct, 06:19 · Archive

Andy Burnham is officially backing the Oxford-Cambridge Corridor, which leads the world in university spinout companies.

Andy Burnham's government has publicly reaffirmed its backing for the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor. New research commissioned by the Oxford-Cambridge Supercluster Board highlights the region's global strengths in turning university research into high-value businesses.

According to a study delivered by Public First, the corridor leads the world in university spinout companies, with 740 created to date. This figure is almost 70 per cent higher than California's Bay Area and more than double that of Boston. However, the corridor ranked second last of 14 global clusters for scaling those businesses into global firms.

Lord Vallance, Chair of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor, said the region has a long history of turning research into innovation, pointing to discoveries including DNA, the first antibiotic produced at scale, processor designs used in the world's phones and a vaccine that helped tackle Covid-19. He added: 'The task now is to turn more of that innovation into companies, jobs and growth here in the UK.'
