Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is campaigning for progressive Democratic candidates ahead of the 3 November midterm elections.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic congresswoman from New York, is drawing large crowds while campaigning for progressive candidates ahead of the 3 November midterm elections. In a final campaign swing across the country, she has packed rooms in Michigan's deeply Republican Upper Peninsula, where attendees chanted 'AOC'. Hundreds of students turned out to see her in Ohio and Maine as she campaigned alongside Democrats in competitive races, and she was in California's Central Valley on Friday lending support to a progressive candidate seeking to unseat a House Republican.

Ocasio-Cortez has built a national following with tens of millions of social media followers that gives her a platform far beyond her New York district. Her nickname AOC has become one of the most recognisable in American politics. She is now testing whether her brand of progressive politics can appeal beyond the Democratic base and help the party win competitive elections. At a recent fundraiser, she said: 'We have written a check on the left, saying if you champion these policies that have popular support, we can win. Now it is time to cash in. Now it is time to go out and show what we are capable of.' As she contemplates future political moves, including a possible run for the White House or the Senate, the midterms will reveal whether her campaigning translates to electoral success.
