Archbishop of Canterbury visits Herefordshire harvest festival

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 14 Oct, 13:33 · Archive

The Archbishop of Canterbury visited a harvest festival in Herefordshire to mark the 1,350th anniversary of the Diocese of Hereford.

Dame Sarah Mullally, the first female Archbishop of Canterbury and former Bishop of London, visited the Big Apple Harvestime Festival in Much Marcle, Herefordshire, over the weekend. The visit marked the 1,350th anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese of Hereford.

Following a sermon at Putley Parish Church's Harvest Festival, the Archbishop toured the festival with the Bishop of Hereford, Richard Jackson. The pair sampled cooked apple varieties served by volunteers from the Big Apple Community Benefit Society and spoke with cider makers and apple growers about their work in the church's rural diocese.

More than a thousand visitors attended the festival, which featured orchard-related activities across seven venues. Events included perry pear pressing on a traditional mill, apple identification, live music, talks and Morris dancing. Musical performances included Uke Can't be Serious, Faith Healers, David Riley and the Ledbury singers. Jack Toye gave a talk about his search for a missing perry pear variety known as 'Cheat Boy'. The Big Apple is organised by volunteers and will return with its Blossomtime festival on the May Day weekend in 2027.
