A federal task force is investigating nine universities, including Arizona State, accused of misusing J-1 visas for foreign researchers.
A new federal Visa Fraud Strike Team is investigating Arizona State University and eight other elite universities for allegedly misusing J-1 visas for foreign researchers. Vice President JD Vance and Department of Labor Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito announced the investigation during a press conference on Thursday morning.
The officials accused the nine schools of using J-1 visas, which are intended for exchange visitors including researchers and scholars, to undermine American researchers' wages. According to Vance and D'Esposito, these nine schools use J-1 visas for roughly 61 per cent of federally funded research positions, compared to a national average of about 38 per cent.
D'Esposito said subpoenas have already been served and investigations are underway at all nine schools. He accused the universities of improperly using J-1 visa classifications 'to avoid employment obligations, exploit taxpayer-funded programs, and undermine American workers', adding that such conduct 'will not be tolerated'. Vance said the practice 'simply has to stop'.
