Art installation gives fallen beech tree new life

An art installation made from a beech tree uprooted in a storm is going on display this week.
A beech tree was uprooted in a severe storm at the end of 2024, and Hutton Buscel Artists saw the destruction as an artistic opportunity. Nine artists collaborated through workshops to create 'Arboreous', meaning 'tree-like', transforming sections of the fallen tree into what the group calls 'a different kind of standing tree'. The tree sections were donated by Wykeham Estate.
Stasia Valentine conceived and designed the original concept. The artists used wood, glass, sheet-lead and wrought iron in the piece. Don Barker, a well-known artisan blacksmith who has previously worked on Westminster Cathedral, joined the project as an adviser and proved instrumental in bringing all the elements together. Steve Fearnley of Ryedale Wood-turners prepared the wooden sections, which each of the nine artists decorated with individual designs.
The installation went on display this week. Valentine said: 'It's been an absolute labour of love which has been months in the making, and we are really excited to share it with everybody.' The project marks 14 years that the artist group has been based in Hutton Buscel.
