Artists win climate garden competition at Howbery Park

An art competition at Howbery Business Park in Wallingford invited artists to interpret the theme of gardens adapting to climate change.

Artworks exploring how gardens can adapt to climate change have been celebrated in an Art in the Park competition at Howbery Business Park in Wallingford. The competition invited artists of all ages to interpret the theme Gardens for a changing climate, with winning entries announced at a ceremony on October 6 at Howbery's Manor House.

Stephen Gray won first prize in the over-18s category for his piece Gardening with Nature. He combined elements from his own garden with features from Howbery's Flood Resilient Garden, such as rain chains, and added climate-resistant plants including an olive tree and lavender, plus a water feature. 'I think it shows that it's not difficult to adapt gardens for dry spells,' Gray said.

The competition theme was inspired by Howbery's Flood Resilient Garden, which was relocated to the business park after appearing at the 2024 Chelsea Flower Show. Lottie Newman, head of estates at Howbery Park and a competition judge, praised the standard of entries and the varied interpretations of the theme. An exhibition of the artworks will be open to the public from October 7 to 9 in the meeting rooms next to the Manor Café at Howbery Park, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm.
