York Art Gallery will open an exhibition exploring women artists' work from February 2027, featuring pieces lost for over 100 years.
York Art Gallery will launch Interwoven: Stories of Women, Textiles and Art on 5 February 2027, running until 6 June. The exhibition will feature contemporary textile art from the gallery's own collection alongside loans from contemporary artists including Anna Perach, Lubaina Himid and Magdalena Abakanowicz.
The exhibition will also include work spanning more than 100 years from three generations of women from the same family: Mabel Nicholson, Nancy Nicholson, EQ Nicholson and Louisa Creed. Their work will visit on tour from the Women's Art Collection at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, in an exhibition called Relative Ties that traces the creative legacy across paper, fabric, rugs, interior design, wallpaper, letterpress design and painting.
Livia Turnbull, curator of contemporary art at York Art Gallery, said the exhibition explores and challenges the status of textile art and its association with domesticity. She described Relative Ties as telling 'an important story of the shifting expectations placed on the Nicholson women and how family shaped their creative output'.
