A banned 19-year-old driver reached 100mph while fleeing police in Carlisle in a vehicle with cloned number plates.

A banned 19-year-old driver led police on a high-speed chase over more than 15 miles after being spotted driving a Nissan X-Trail with cloned number plates. The pursuit began at around 7.20am on Wednesday, 9 September, when Scottish police identified the vehicle and passed the case to Cumbria officers as it entered England on the M6.

Naisbett exited the motorway at junction 43 and entered Carlisle's Warwick Road, where he refused to stop. Prosecutor Diane Jackson told Carlisle Magistrates' Court that the Nissan crossed solid white road markings, sped through red lights and overtook traffic, reaching 60mph in a 30mph zone. He accelerated to 80mph on Eastern Way, continuing through more red lights and overtaking vehicles on the A6 along 30mph London Road.

"It accelerated to 100mph, narrowly missing a collision with oncoming traffic," Mrs Jackson said. Naisbett then headed out of the city and rejoined the M6 at junction 42 before heading south, where speeds reached between 100mph and 115mph.

Police deployed a stinger device near the Stoneybeck roundabout close to Penrith after the vehicle left the motorway at junction 41. The device burst the vehicle's tyres, but Naisbett swerved and collided with a stationary HGV.

In court, Naisbett admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to co-operate with a drug wipe test, no insurance and fraudulent use of a registration mark. Both the prosecutor and defence solicitor Adele Graham agreed the case was serious enough to be sent to Carlisle Crown Court for sentencing.
