Eight Major League Baseball players received $23.15 million qualifying offers from their teams on Monday. The recipients were Yankees closer David Bednar, Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki, Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena, Brewers first baseman/outfielder Jake Bauers, Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers, Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers, Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe and Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon.
The qualifying offer figure is determined by the average of the top 125 major league contracts. Players can only receive a qualifying offer if they have been with the same team continuously since opening day and have never received one previously. Only 18 of 157 qualifying offers have been accepted since the system began in 2012.
If a player rejects a qualifying offer and signs with another team before the next amateur draft, his former club receives draft pick compensation. The placement of the compensation pick depends on the value of the new contract and the losing team's revenue-sharing and luxury tax status.
