Wiltshire firms pledge support for student work placements

Dozens of Wiltshire businesses have pledged support for T Level work experience placements through Wiltshire College & University Centre's Big Placement Pledge.

Dozens of businesses across Wiltshire have pledged support for industry placements through Wiltshire College & University Centre's Big Placement Pledge. The scheme, now in its second year, is a 13-week campaign that encourages employers to offer T Level work experience opportunities.

The placements cover sectors including construction, hospitality, horticulture, animal care, and health and social care. Businesses supporting the scheme include Bowood, Shaw Trust, PAH Construction, Palmer Gardens, and Cricklade Hotel. The college's work placement team is now working with these businesses to identify suitable opportunities and match them with relevant curriculum areas.

Ann Simpson, work placement team leader at Wiltshire College & University Centre, said the pledge had been 'a great opportunity to build relationships with businesses across the region, from those already supporting our students to organisations exploring industry placements for the first time'. She added that 'every employer who opens their doors to a T Level student is helping to create opportunities that can make a real difference to a young person's future'.

T Level students gain practical experience from these placements, which can lead directly to employment or further training. Lucy Harding, named Engineering Student of the Year at the college's student awards in September, benefited from the scheme. Her placement gave her the opportunity to demonstrate her skills in a real workplace and has led to a three-year apprenticeship with the same employer.

Although the Big Placement Pledge campaign has come to an end, the college said it is continuing to work with employers to convert the pledges into opportunities for students.
