North Carolina defeated No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17 on Saturday, giving head coach Bill Belichick his first win against a ranked opponent at the university. Pittsburgh had just taken a 17-14 lead when the Tar Heels responded immediately. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. hit Shamar Easter for a 75-yard touchdown pass down the seam for the go-ahead score.
Edwards completed 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Demon June also rushed for a touchdown and Jordan Shipp caught six passes for 93 yards. For Pittsburgh, fifth-year senior Holden Geriner made his first collegiate start after sophomore Mason Heintschel tore the ACL in his right knee during the previous week's game against Virginia Tech. Geriner completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards with two interceptions. La'Vell Wright scored two rushing touchdowns for Pitt.
Pittsburgh struggled late as Geriner sailed a fourth-down pass that was dropped by an open receiver, and Pitt turned the ball over on downs at the North Carolina 21. North Carolina improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Pittsburgh fell to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference. It was UNC's first ranked road win since defeating No. 9 Miami in 2020.
