Leaders from across northern England and southern Scotland have celebrated five years of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, which funds major regeneration projects across the region.

Leaders from across the north of England and south of Scotland have celebrated five years of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal at a conference in Gretna Green on October 7. The £452 million deal was signed in 2021 and brings together councils from Cumberland, Westmorland and Furness, Northumberland, Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway to deliver projects aimed at boosting economic growth, jobs and investment across the region.

For Cumbria, some of the most significant schemes backed by the deal include the Carlisle Station Gateway project, the Carlisle Citadels university redevelopment and place-based regeneration programmes in Wigton, Longtown and Egremont. Funding has also supported the Digital Borderlands Voucher Scheme and wider investment in tourism, transport and business innovation.

During the conference, delegates heard about projects ranging from the Dairy Nexus research facility in Dumfries and Galloway to investment along Hadrian's Wall and the Mountain Bike Innovation Centre in the Scottish Borders. A question-and-answer session involving leaders of the five councils focused on the benefits of working across the Scotland-England border to secure investment and tackle shared challenges.

Cumberland Council leader Mark Fryer said the partnership was helping to unlock 'transformational investment' across the area. He stated: 'The Borderlands Partnership is helping to unlock transformational investment across Cumberland, supporting projects that will strengthen our city and towns, improve connectivity and create opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.'
