Breast cancer specialist calls for stronger workplace support

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 30 Oct, 10:15 · Archive

An NHS breast cancer specialist has urged workplaces to introduce stronger policies to support women during and after cancer treatment. Dr Hugo de La Peña, a health champion for Action Hampshire's Communities Against Cancer project, spoke at the Breast Cancer: Prevention to Action forum in the House of Commons during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr de La Peña highlighted the lack of employer support reported by many women undergoing breast cancer treatment and urged decision-makers to develop more supportive workplace policies.

The forum brought together Labour MP Peter Lamb, cancer charities including Wessex Cancer Alliance, women with lived experience, employment law specialists and corporate representatives. It was developed in collaboration with Maggie's, Cancer Research UK and the G100 Women Association.

Kishor Patel, lead for the Communities Against Cancer project, said attending the forum was 'such a powerful way to understand the issues faced by women in the workplace undergoing cancer treatment'. He added that the project would apply these learnings to keep raising awareness of cancer.

Dr de La Peña is one of Action Hampshire's community health champions, who use their knowledge and experience to support their communities and encourage open conversations about cancer.
