A 34-year-old British tourist has been airlifted to hospital after falling approximately 10 metres from a cliff near Amado Beach in Aljezur, Algarve on Tuesday afternoon. He sustained a traumatic brain injury in the incident.
The man was using old cables attached to rocks when one broke. These cables are traditionally used by fishermen to access an area called Monte do Engenheiro near the beach. He was travelling with a friend, who raised the alarm around 3.30pm. António Ângelo, chief of the Aljezur volunteer firefighters, said the victim was conscious but had incoherent speech. "The victim fell from a height of about ten metres and suffered a traumatic brain injury," Ângelo said.
Emergency responders deployed 20 firefighters and an air ambulance to the scene. Amado Beach is a popular destination for surfers near the town of Aljezur, about 40 minutes from the resort of Lagos. No further information about the man's condition was available.
