Joshua Foster was fined €3,000 after his two-year-old son fell from a fourth-floor hotel window in Cyprus.
Joshua Foster, a 37-year-old from Essex, has been fined €3,000 (£2,500) after his two-year-old son fell to his death from a fourth-floor window of a hotel in Cyprus. Foster pleaded guilty to causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act at Paphos District Court.
The child fell from the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas on 12 July during a family holiday. Foster, his wife, two children and in-laws had arrived at the five-star beachfront hotel in the early hours of that day.
The incident occurred as the family returned to their rooms to prepare for dinner. Foster, his father-in-law and son left their rooms and walked towards the elevator at around 6pm. As they approached the lift, the boy noticed a waterpark outside.
Foster placed the toddler on a windowsill to show him the view. The court heard that Foster believed there was protective glass and that the window was closed when he "lost control" of his young son. The child fell approximately 33 to 40 feet from the fourth floor.
Police received reports of a child falling from the hotel at around 6.40pm. The boy was taken to Paphos General Hospital where, despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead.
At sentencing on Friday, District Judge Froso Christodoulidou handed down the €3,000 fine. Foster wept as the sentence was read out. After the hearing, he told reporters: "Thank you for your support. I'm just looking forward to going home and being home with my wife and daughter." He then left the court with his parents.
