A 36-year-old British woman drowned in the Bahamas while attempting to rescue her two children who were swept out to sea while snorkelling.

A 36-year-old British woman drowned in the Bahamas on Tuesday while attempting to save her two children who were swept out to sea during a snorkelling expedition. The family was on a trip in Bimini when strong currents carried the children away. The woman entered the water to rescue them.

Linty Stuart, owner of L&A Water Taxi, was captaining the snorkelling boat when people on board alerted him to the incident. He said he saw two boys and the mother in the water. Bystanders were able to pull the two boys from the water, but strong currents made it difficult to reach the mother. Mr Stuart spotted the woman 'face down' in the water and turned the boat towards a 'calm section' of the water.

The woman was pulled from the water and taken to North Bimini Ferry Dock. The boat's first mate Jason Saunders attempted to perform CPR when the vessel docked, before paramedics arrived. She was taken to a medical centre where she was pronounced dead. A post-mortem is due to take place.
