Food scrap pickup services expand across United States

New food scrap collection services are offering to pick up household waste like coffee grounds and eggshells for composting.

Food scrap collection services are beginning to operate in communities across the United States, offering to collect household food waste for composting. The services pick up items including coffee grounds, eggshells and carrot tops that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Composting diverts this organic waste from landfills, where it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By diverting food scraps to composting facilities instead, the services aim to reduce both landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
