Burnley appoint 50-year-old Swiss manager Fabio Celestini four days after sacking Nicky Hayen.

Burnley have appointed 50-year-old Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, four days after the dismissal of Nicky Hayen. Celestini, a former Switzerland midfielder, arrives after leading FC Basel to a domestic double in 2024-25, winning the Swiss Super League title and Swiss Cup. He previously managed CSKA Moscow, whom he left in May this year, and has also held positions at Swiss clubs Lugano, Luzern and Sion.

The appointment comes as Burnley face a difficult Championship campaign following relegation from the Premier League. The club have won only one of their 12 league games this season and remain without a home league victory for over a year. They currently sit 22nd in the table.

Diego López, Burnley's newly appointed chief football officer, said Celestini "brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for" and that he "showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley". Celestini told the club's website: "I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters' ambitions." He will take charge of his first match in Saturday's home league game against Portsmouth.
