Swindon business director admits attacking man with fork

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 06:00 · Archive

Melvane Dainton, director of a Swindon telecommunications company, has pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and carrying a fork as an offensive weapon.

Melvane Dainton, 61, of Haydon Wick in Swindon, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He appeared at Swindon Crown Court on 9 October and confirmed carrying a sharp metal fork on Wood Street in Old Town when he attacked Ryan McCombie, 30, of Calne.

Dainton is a director of telecommunications company Danaron Limited. He had originally been charged with causing grievous bodily harm but denied this charge, which was subsequently dropped in favour of the actual bodily harm charge.

McCombie also faced charges arising from the same incident on 16 March. The court heard that he used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards Dainton in a racially aggravated offence and was involved in a fight. He also allegedly damaged a police van and a police cell.

McCombie pleaded guilty to affray, two counts of criminal damage, and racially aggravated harassment. He was sentenced in the magistrates' court on 16 July to an 18-month community order, with mental health treatment and rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Dainton's case was sent to Swindon Crown Court rather than the magistrates' court because of the seriousness of his charges.
