Businessman proposes underground car park for York outlet
Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 15 Oct, 17:02 · Archive
A businessman has proposed an automatic underground car park beneath McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in York to ease parking problems.
Seth Kazzim, chief executive of Silo Industries, has proposed an automatic underground car park below McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in York. The facility would store vehicles below ground from where they could be retrieved on demand. Mr Kazzim said the car park would free up space for outdoor seating, events and more shops, as well as improving walking routes around the site.
The proposal follows persistent parking problems at the outlet, off the A19 Fulford Interchange. The outlet currently has 2,700 spaces. In September, York Council approved a seasonal parking ban along St Nicholas Avenue and Naburn Lane during the outlet's Winter Wonderland event, which has caused traffic congestion in recent years with cars parked on verges and footpaths. Double yellow lines will be painted to enforce the restrictions.
Cllr Kate Ravilious, the council's Labour transport spokesperson, said the restrictions were needed to improve safety for all road users and manage congestion. Outlet Manager Paul Tyler said the restrictions would remove available spaces as a last resort. However, McArthurGlen stated there are currently no plans for an underground car park at the outlet and Mr Kazzim's idea does not represent anything being progressed by them.
