Care provider downgraded from outstanding to inadequate

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 16 Oct, 06:32 · Archive

Dedicated Care East Anglia in King's Lynn has been rated inadequate and placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in August. The watchdog found the provider in breach of five legal regulations relating to person-centred care, consent, safe care and treatment, safeguarding and good management.

Inspectors identified numerous safety failures. Staff did not always follow policies and procedures, including failing to inform GPs about people's falls, which meant appropriate medical advice and risk management might not be provided. Faulty equipment was used to support people, and medicines and treatments were not always managed safely. One person taking blood-thinning medication had a risk assessment that did not cover all risks linked to falls or head injury. Staff had attended safeguarding training but failed to report concerns that met the relevant criteria. The CQC said leaders had been advised they reported too many incidents.

Hazel Roberts, the CQC's deputy director of adult social care for the east of England, said leaders did not adequately assess people's individual needs or ensure staff had the right skills to keep people safe. She stated that leaders did not listen to safety concerns and that lessons were not learned because not all incidents were investigated or reported.

At the time of inspection, four people were receiving domiciliary care and 30 were in supported living. Dedicated Care East Anglia said it was "deeply disappointed" by the rating and that it did not reflect positive feedback from service users and families.
