A cat stranded beneath a bridge in Summerseat was rescued after a social media appeal brought residents together.

A cat stranded beneath a bridge in Summerseat was brought to safety after residents rallied together. The tabby had become stuck on a small patch of dry ground as the River Irwell flowed past the bridge near Railway Street. A social media appeal posted on Wednesday afternoon, October 14, asked the public for help.

Dog walker McKenzie Madison, 35, from Tottington, saw the appeal and offered to assist. Madison, an ultramarathon runner and open-water swimmer with experience crossing rivers, had a rope available. Resident Jess Platt agreed to meet him at the scene with a cat carrier, and another man also arrived with a rope. The group found a safer route further along the river, allowing Madison to approach the frightened cat rather than climbing beneath the bridge. He retrieved the distressed cat from its position on the dry ground.
