Ole Miss students died from kratom pills bought at vape shop

Two University of Mississippi students died after taking synthetic kratom pills purchased from an Oxford vape store, court documents reveal.

Two University of Mississippi students died on 21 September after taking illegal synthetic kratom pills, according to court documents revealed in Mississippi federal court. Aidan Hamilton, 18, died from combined use of various substances including cough syrup, whilst Robert Strang, 20, died from inhalation asphyxiation. Both had identical controlled substances in their systems: mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and 7-OH, all compounds found in SMAX Psuedo-DHM pills discovered at both death scenes.

Yahya Mosleh, 51, and his son Islam Mosleh, 18, have been arrested and charged with federal drug offences. They were working at Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer store in Oxford when investigators traced purchases by both students. According to a criminal complaint, Yahya allegedly told an undercover agent requesting 7-OH kratom pills to 'be careful taking these pills because people were dying from them' before selling him the dangerous tablets.

The DEA classified MGM-15 and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl as Schedule I controlled substances in August, making it illegal to buy or sell them. Hamilton allegedly purchased the pills twice from Puffs in the days before his death. Strang made a purchase from the store, though investigators say he also bought the product from another smoke shop about 20 miles away.
