Coleman joins Essendon after trade from Brisbane Lions

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 15 Oct, 05:02 · Archive

Keidean Coleman has been traded from Brisbane Lions to Essendon after requesting a move to Melbourne.

Keidean Coleman has been traded from Brisbane Lions to Essendon in the dying stages of the AFL trade period on Wednesday night. The 26-year-old requested the move after flying to Melbourne with his family to meet new Essendon coach Mark McVeigh and list boss Matt Rosa.

Coleman, from Katherine in the Northern Territory, was drawn to Essendon's proud Indigenous history and the opportunity to play in major games including Dreamtime at the 'G and on Anzac Day. Essendon sought to use club legend Michael Long, a Norm Smith medallist and dual premiership champion, to help secure Coleman's commitment, but Long's phone calls reached Coleman while he was travelling on planes.

"I did get a couple of phone calls," Coleman told SEN Radio on Thursday. "But he called me when I was on the plane on the way to Melbourne and then he called me on the plane on the way back to Brisbane." Coleman said he planned to call Long back after what he described as a whirlwind 24 hours.

The 26-year-old has managed just 15 senior games across three injury-plagued seasons at Brisbane since starring in the Lions' 2023 grand final loss to Collingwood. He said he needed to be playing more AFL games.
