Ipswich craft beer shop Hopsters to relocate to waterfront

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 5 Nov, 14:44 · Archive

Hopsters craft beer shop in Ipswich is relocating to the waterfront on 22 January 2027.

Hopsters, the craft beer shop founded by entrepreneur and DJ Ed Barnes, is moving from its location on St Nicholas Street after nine years. The shop will relocate to the former Cult Cafe Bar on Ipswich waterfront, rebranding as Hopsters Dockside. The new venue will open on 22 January 2027, just 20 days after the St Nicholas Street branch closes on 2 January.

Hopsters Dockside will become a destination for live music, festivals, tap takeovers and food. Dough Pusher Pizza, currently based at the Bury St Edmunds branch of Hopsters, will also operate from the new waterfront location. The building was previously home to Cult Cafe Bar, which operated from the James Hehir Building of the University of Suffolk until its closure in 2023.

Mr Barnes said: 'We've decided to take the plunge; it's something we've wanted to do for a long time. There's so much we want to do with this space; it's going to be incredible.' Hopsters opened on St Nicholas Street in October 2017 after Mr Barnes and Steve Long wanted to establish a place to buy the craft beers they wanted in Ipswich. The business has since expanded to multiple locations across Suffolk and Essex.
