Cumbria raises £13,000 in suicide prevention awareness campaign

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 7 Oct, 17:08 · Archive

Communities across Cumbria have raised more than £13,000 in a month-long suicide prevention campaign led by Every Life Matters. The campaign held events throughout September to remember those lost to suicide, support those affected and promote practical steps to prevent future deaths.

Activities included peer-support networking, candlelight gatherings, community events and suicide prevention training sessions. A Peer-to-Peer Support Networking Event at Frenchfield Sports Centre on September 9 brought together individuals, organisations and community groups involved in peer support to share learning and strengthen local networks.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, candlelight gatherings were held in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal, Maryport, Penrith and Whitehaven. More than 530 people attended across all locations, with over 230 at the Maryport event. Attendees took part in a minute of silence at 8pm, with events providing a space for reflection and solidarity.

Chris Wood, CEO of Every Life Matters, said: 'September was an incredibly moving and powerful month. Across Cumbria, we saw people standing shoulder to shoulder—to remember, to talk openly, to raise awareness and to take action. Every candle lit, every conversation started and every lap completed carried an important message: suicide prevention is everyone's business, and every one of us can make a difference.'

Every Life Matters also supported Theatre by the Lake's touring production of Every Brilliant Thing, an uplifting play about mental health and resilience. The charity's team and Ambassadors attended performances across Cumbria, offering support, sharing resources and being available to talk with audience members.

On September 20, the campaign continued with the Stride Against Suicide relay at Fell Fook Park in Windermere.
