Norwich cyclists stage glow ride to highlight safety concerns

Cyclists in Norwich will stage a lit 'glow ride' on 22 October to highlight women's safety while cycling after dark.

Cyclists in Norwich will stage a 'glow ride' on 22 October, with their bikes and bodies decorated with lights and reflective materials to highlight safety concerns, particularly for women cycling after dark. The event is part of Cycling UK's national My Ride, Our Right campaign and aims to raise awareness of the need for safer cycle routes and better lighting.

Organisers say that for many women, cycling after dark means thinking carefully about routes, lighting, traffic and isolated areas, which can shape where, when or how they cycle—or even whether they do at all. Ian Small, regional cycling development officer for Cycling UK, said last year's inaugural ride 'was a huge success' and 'did so much to raise the issue of women's safety'.

The ride will start at City Hall at 6pm on Thursday, 22 October, with a welcoming speech and briefing at 6.30pm and the 45-minute cycle through the city centre beginning at 6.45pm. It will finish at St Saviour's Yard, where local businesses will provide food and drink. All cyclists are welcome to join. The event is organised by Bicycle Links, Women's Cycling Safety Audit Norwich, Norwich Bike Repair Cooperative, Kidical Mass Norwich and Critical Mass Norwich, with support from Eaton Park Community Association.
