Plans approved for veterans flats on derelict Eastwood site

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 3 Nov, 11:37 · Archive

Broxtowe Borough Council has approved plans to build six flats for homeless or at-risk veterans on vacant land in Eastwood.

Plans have been unanimously approved to build six one- and two-bedroom flats for homeless or at-risk former soldiers on empty land off Cross Street in Eastwood's Hill Top. Broxtowe Borough Council purchased the vacant site in October 2024. The scheme was originally planned to include eight flats but was revised to six to meet national living space standards. Six car parking spaces will also be created.

The project had originally been hoped to be completed in 2025, then delayed to early 2026, before facing further hold-ups. BBC Nottingham reports that no timetable was given for when work will now start.

Cllr Greg Marshall of Broxtowe Alliance praised the long-standing project, saying: 'This is a long-standing project to try and bring forward that piece of land which people say has been derelict for a long time. But the intention of course is a very laudable one around veterans' accommodation, and that's excellent.' He also commended the council for adhering to living space and car parking standards.

A three-storey apartment building was previously approved for the site but was never built. Council leader Milan Radulovic, who lives opposite the site, said there are plans to name the development after the late Sir Dennis Pettitt, a D-Day veteran who served as leader of Nottinghamshire County Council between 1981 and 1998.

A number of councillors said a 'very strict' construction management plan would be required due to the site's nature and narrow nearby streets. John Handley, chairman of the Eastwood and District Royal British Legion, said previously: 'These places are in need, so the sooner they're available, the better.'
