Two degree apprentices have delivered a training facility for students at their former college in West Cumbria.
Two degree apprentices at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Lyla Chandler and Ellie Telford, have delivered a hands-on construction training facility at Energy Coast University Technical College (UTC) in Lillyhall, West Cumbria, their former college. They led the project whilst managing a multidisciplinary team and coordinating supply chain partners.
The facility was built within a workshop at the UTC and is designed to give students practical experience in construction and deconstruction. It features pad foundations, a steel frame, timber framing, wall and roof cladding, brick and blockwork, and electrical installations. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure apprentices supported the project across planning, health and safety, quantity surveying, electrical and civil engineering.
Lyla said the project was 'an opportunity to gain valuable project management skills and experience so early on in our careers whilst providing something beneficial to many students at the college', and expressed hope that it would inspire younger students to pursue STEM roles. The college had approached Morgan Sindall Infrastructure to develop a training resource that would help students understand the skills, standards and teamwork needed for the workplace.
Eldon Garnett, managing director – nuclear at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, said the success of the pair 'shows the power of connecting classroom learning with real industry experience'. Energy Coast UTC vice principal Simon Richardson praised their contribution and professional approach.
