Georgian townhouses win UK award after restoration

Summarised from Wilts & Glos Standard's report · Updated 5 Nov, 15:09 · Archive

Two derelict Grade II* listed Georgian townhouses in Cirencester have won a top award for their restoration.

Two Grade II* listed Georgian townhouses at 30-32 Dollar Street in Cirencester have won a Five Star Award for Best Residential Renovation in Gloucestershire at the UK Property Awards. Architectural practice Charles Mullineux Design carried out the restoration, transforming the derelict buildings into three homes over two years.

During restoration, craftspeople uncovered historic details that had been concealed or damaged for decades. Original Georgian cornicing hidden beneath asbestos was recast by hand, marble fireplaces that had been boarded up were revealed, and a vandalised oval roof lantern was reconstructed. The team also repaired the central staircase and its ironwork balustrade, and conserved original shutters and fireplaces. The restoration was carried out with Cotswold District Council's conservation officer and included modern kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces within the historic buildings.

Charles Mullineux, founder of the practice, said: 'To see Dollar Street recognised on a stage like this is a tremendous honour. It was a building many feared was lost and bringing it back took the skill and dedication of a great many people: our team, the craftspeople, the conservation officers and a client who believed it could be saved.' The award was announced at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 23 October.
