Abandoned dog's recovery boosted by Viagra medication

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 16:32 · Archive

Dijon, a three-year-old terrier abandoned in Oxfordshire, has shown significant improvement in pulmonary hypertension after treatment with Sildenafil.

Dijon, a three-year-old terrier, was found abandoned in Oxfordshire with fractures to his elbow and both ankles, along with a serious heart and lung condition. Taken to Ardley Vets earlier this year, investigations revealed he suffered from pulmonary hypertension, believed caused by lungworm. The dog was prescribed Sildenafil, known by the brand name Viagra, which is also used to treat certain heart and lung conditions in humans and dogs.

His latest check-up at Bicester Vets showed significant improvement in his pulmonary hypertension. His carer, Annabelle Pottle, said vets were 'really pleased' with his progress and called him their 'little miracle'. She noted that waiting for updates had left supporters 'sitting on pins and needles'.

Dijon will remain on the medication for another six weeks before undergoing further assessment. If his condition continues to improve, vets hope to carry out CT and heart scans before deciding whether surgery on his fractures can proceed. Any future surgery would be carried out by specialist orthopaedic surgeon Professor Gareth Arthurs. More than £7,500 has been raised for his treatment.
