Two men were banned from driving after racing at more than 100mph on the A34 in Wilmslow.
Two men were sentenced for dangerous driving after racing each other at over 100mph on the A34 bypass in Wilmslow on 4 April. An undercover police officer in an unmarked car filmed them accelerating sharply away from traffic lights before racing along Pendleton Way and the A34. Members of the public had gathered on the roadside to film the vehicles.
Olly Catterall, 21, of Buttermere Court, Congleton, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Crewe Magistrates' Court and was handed a 12-month driving ban. He must also complete an extended driving test and pay fines and court costs exceeding £1,700. Joel Partington, 28, of Portrea Drive, Stockport, also pleaded guilty and received a more severe sentence: an eight-month suspended prison sentence for 18 months, an 18-month driving ban, and 200 hours of unpaid work, plus an extended driving test.
PC Martin Hilditch said: 'There appears to be a mentality where drivers feel it is perfectly acceptable to ignore the rules of the roads, using them as their personal racetracks.' He stated that the pair disregarded both their own safety and that of other road users and the pedestrians watching. Cheshire Police said it conducts regular enforcement operations to prevent serious collisions and will continue to take action against those involved in dangerous driving.
