A driver has avoided jail after being found guilty of hitting a woman and dragging her along a Glasgow street.
Jason Rae, 54, struck Alisha Ferns, then 32, in Bell Street in Glasgow's Merchant City on 10 June 2023. Miss Ferns had lost her balance and fallen to the ground before Rae hit her and dragged her along the road, then fled the scene. She was left with a fractured skull, collapsed lung and spent 12 days in intensive care on ventilation.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Rae was found guilty of causing serious injury to Miss Ferns by careless driving and failing to stop to give his name and address. Rae had told police officers that he had been in another area of the city and called the charge against him 'fictitious'.
Sheriff Louise Arrol KC said she was not satisfied that custody was necessary. Rae was placed under supervision for two years and ordered to do 300 hours of unpaid work. He was electronically tagged for 12 months, confined between 7pm and 7am, and disqualified from driving for five years, after which he will have to complete an extended test before being allowed to drive again.
