Headteacher killed after being dragged under car for a mile

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 14 Oct, 09:20 · Archive

Michael Mullins, 56, head of Stretford Grammar School, was struck by a Volvo while cycling home and dragged for over a mile beneath the vehicle.

Michael Mullins, 56, the head of Stretford Grammar School, was struck by a black Volvo XC90 at a junction in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, at about 6pm on 20 April whilst cycling the 19-mile journey home to Weaverham, near Northwich, Cheshire. He became trapped under the vehicle.

Simon Richardson, 35, who was driving the Volvo, is accused of murder. Prosecutors told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court that Richardson drove straight through give way markers and, knowing that Mr Mullins was trapped beneath his car and at risk of death or serious injury, continued driving at speeds up to 60mph for more than a mile. During the journey he stopped and saw that Mr Mullins was still alive, but after unsuccessfully trying to dislodge him he drove on again, swerving and mounting a grass verge. Richardson then ran over Mr Mullins a second time before driving off and leaving him in the road.

Eyewitnesses stopped at the scene and called the emergency services. After Mr Mullins was thrown clear of the vehicle, he was treated at the roadside but pronounced dead 40 minutes later. Richardson later stopped at a petrol station to refuel and pick up weight-loss medication.
