Drug mule mother jailed for smuggling cannabis into UK

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 16:20 · Archive

A 24-year-old mother was among 11 Britons jailed for smuggling 460kg of cannabis worth £13.8 million into the UK.

Paige Crisp, a 24-year-old mother of a four-year-old daughter from Malvern, Worcestershire, has been jailed for more than two years after being convicted of attempting to carry, remove and deal with Class B drugs, as well as intent to evade prohibition on importing.

Crisp was among a group of 11 Britons stopped by Border Force at Birmingham Airport on 9 August 2024. The gang collectively carried 460kg of cannabis hidden in 22 suitcases, with a street value of £13.8 million. Each member had been given two large cases containing 20kg of vacuum-packed cannabis, concealed beneath a thin layer of clothing. The gang had paid excess baggage fees at Bangkok Airport to transport the suitcases in the hold.

The National Crime Agency detected the operation after noticing that four passengers with two large suitcases each had travelled from Birmingham to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris that day. Eight of the suitcases contained Apple AirTag trackers all connected to the same Apple ID, which raised authorities' suspicions. The group was attempting to smuggle the cannabis from Thailand via Paris before being arrested at Birmingham.

Crisp was convicted alongside other members of the gang at Birmingham Crown Court on 19 August. Other members of the 11 have also been convicted.
