Al Medina Bakery in Birmingham has been shut down following the discovery of rats, mice and cockroaches.
Al Medina Bakery Ltd on Stratford Road in Birmingham has been shut down following the discovery of pests on the premises. Environmental health officers from Birmingham City Council discovered the infestation during an inspection on Thursday, October 22.
The officers had initially visited the bakery as part of an exercise to check retailers were not selling cans and bottles of Shani, a fruit drink containing EDTA, a chemical banned in UK drinks. During this visit, they spotted a dead adult cockroach on a box in the shop.
An on-the-spot inspection was then carried out, which uncovered further problems. Environmental health officer Kizzy Bent told Birmingham Magistrates Court: "I noticed a white box containing aprons with an adult cockroach which was dead on top of it. That led me to keep going further." The inspection found rat droppings behind a fridge freezer and on top of it, as well as mouse droppings throughout the property. Officers also noted a lack of effective cleaning.
A hygiene emergency prohibition notice was served on the bakery, ordering it to close. Officers revisited the premises on Monday, October 26, and found that the works needed to rectify the issues had yet to be completed.
