Eleanor Coppola's Marie Antoinette film completed by daughter Sofia

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 16:03 · Archive

Eleanor Coppola's behind-the-scenes documentary from the filming of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette has been completed by her daughter and is now in release.

Eleanor Coppola shot 80 hours of behind-the-scenes footage during the production of Sofia Coppola's 2005 film Marie Antoinette. The film had a budget of $40 million, 57 shooting days scheduled and unprecedented access to Versailles. Eleanor was brought in initially to capture moments for marketing purposes, though she had previously made one of the great documentaries about filmmaking, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, documenting her husband Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

After the film's release, Eleanor's footage remained unpublished, which frustrated her. She had hoped to highlight Milena Canonero's costume design. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Eleanor revisited the footage and began envisioning a larger project. Sofia told the Associated Press: "She loved to show how things are made. The truth of what's really going on behind that was always interesting to her."

Eleanor died before completing the documentary, but Sofia saw the project through to completion. Making Marie Antoinette, described as "a luminous and intimate look at the creative process," is now playing in select theatres. It will be available to stream on Mubi from 6 November.
