Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is close to agreeing a contract extension that will extend his commitment beyond 2029.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is close to agreeing a contract extension with the club. Emery held talks with club hierarchy on Wednesday to discuss the club's future, with all parties keen to extend his time at Villa Park. The new deal will hand him greater responsibility for long-term development, and an announcement is expected once details of the finances and contract length have been agreed.

Emery is already under contract until 2029, but this new deal will extend his commitment beyond that date. Villa released a statement on Wednesday confirming the meeting had taken place between Emery, club chairman Nassef Sawiris, executives Roberto Olabe and Damian Vidagany, with "positive discussions establishing a clear commitment beyond 2029 for the joint development of the club".

The announcement is unlikely to come before the weekend, when Villa travel to Manchester United. Emery's name had been linked with a potential move to United should they sack boss Michael Carrick, but the manager has now moved to confirm his commitment to Villa.

Emery has transformed Villa since his arrival. The club were in a relegation fight when he took over, but have qualified for European football every season under his management. He led the side to victory in the Europa League in May, Villa's first major trophy in 30 years.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Old Trafford, Emery insisted he remains committed to his project at Villa. He pointed to examples of unfancied clubs achieving major success, citing Leicester City's Premier League title win and Villarreal's Europa League semi-final appearance under his management four years ago. "With Villarreal, we played in the semi-final four years ago. We were close," Emery said.
