Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1, ending City's perfect Premier League season.

Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday, inflicting City's first Premier League defeat of the season.

Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Marc Guehi's mistake allowed John McGinn to find him. The former Chelsea striker cut in from the left and fired into the roof of Gianluigi Donnarumma's net. Villa maintained their lead until half-time despite City's possession.

Enzo Maresca made two changes at half-time, bringing on Rico Lewis and Phil Foden. City equalised soon after when Erling Haaland headed in Iliman Ndiaye's cross, scoring his ninth league goal of the season.

But Jackson struck again on the hour mark. Ibrahim Mbaye provided a low cross from the left and Jackson's shot squirmed under Donnarumma's body to restore Villa's lead. Villa's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made several important saves to preserve the victory, denying Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki and Josko Gvardiol.

This was City's first league defeat since Maresca's appointment and ended their perfect start to the campaign. They had won their opening seven games and were on course to match Chelsea's long-standing record of nine consecutive league wins to start a Premier League season.

Aston Villa's victory reflected their impressive turnaround in form. After a slow start to the season, Unai Emery's newly rebuilt side have now won three of their last four league games. The result marked their first home league win of the campaign and their fourth consecutive victory across all competitions.

City have now lost their last four league games at Villa Park. The visitors were booed before kick-off following their recent finding of guilt for breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations. City have appealed the decision.
