Emmerdale star backs new Leeds lung cancer centre

Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley is supporting a new specialist lung cancer centre opening in Leeds.

Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley has backed a new GenesisCare specialist cancer centre opening in Leeds. She said the centre could help put Bradford and Yorkshire 'at the forefront' of lung cancer care and described the new service as a 'powerhouse of the North'.

Riley is supporting the move after losing both her grandmother and former Emmerdale co-star Leah Bracknell to lung cancer. She felt compelled to get involved after learning more about the disease and the misconceptions surrounding it.

Riley said she was surprised to discover that lung cancer remains the biggest cancer killer of women in the UK. She noted that she had previously believed breast cancer was the leading cancer killer in women. 'Before I started working with GenesisCare, I always thought the biggest killer, and certainly the biggest killer in women, was breast cancer and it's not. It's lung cancer,' she said.

Riley's campaign is deeply personal. Her grandmother died from lung cancer after initially dismissing her symptoms and delaying a diagnosis until the disease had become advanced. When Riley accompanied her grandmother to a clinician and saw the X-ray, 'the mass was enormous', she recalled.

Riley stressed the importance of not hesitating to contact a GP about potential symptoms. 'I don't want anybody to feel that they can't phone their GP, that they feel they're wasting their GP's time,' she said.
